Tomorrow morning we are venturing off on another epic bike ride. I’d love to blame this one on another tequilla infused idea like last year’s ride to Seattle… but sadly we were sober when it was decided to do this.
We have a pack of 5 doing this ride: Matt, Greg, Uncle Jim, Uncle Jim’s friend and myself. (Poor Matt got roped into this merely by association, and may murder me by the end of this trip) We plan to head off at 6am and then see how far we can get before the sun and heat do us in.
In total the ride is 175km with a total climb of 1288 meters – including two gnarley mountain passes. I’m not going to lie – I have no intention of riding down these passes and will probably opt to put my bike in the car for the downhill – for some reason I have visions of myself as roadkill on the side of the highway if I attempt to go down these passes.
So here’s to an early morning, sore butts and no flat tires!
It’s been a few months and I can no longer use my Olympic or France hangovers as an excuse for not blogging…. but I’m still going to try :)
Right. So here is a quick overview of what I’ve been up to:
I did find out the hard way this weekend that no matter how good your cardio is, it doesn’t matter when you attempt to ride out to Horseshoe bay (61km round trip) and your legs haven’t been on a bike in a month…. oh those hills burned… and I swear, it was uphill BOTH ways.
Needless to say, my legs are sore and I’m back on the biking bandwagon with 2.5 weeks till the Mountain to Sound relay down in Seattle.
This weekend I could have been convinced that Spring has arrived in Vancouver…

It made for an amazing ride along the beach and up through UBC.
The end.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I’d like to introduce you to Bob.
Bob is my new (to me) 2008 Norco crr sL m6… and it may just be the highlight of my year – considering we are waist deep n Olympics that is a pretty big statement.
Bob weighs slightly over 15lbs, is made out of carbon, and I can assure you that he is going to help me fly up hills…. I’d say down hills as well but anyone who has ridden with me knows that I’m a chicken when it comes to going down hills.
I attempted to go for a ride with Bob this weekend – but I couldn’t get the pedals off to put on the old ones that fit my shoes… so I am patiently awaiting the arrival of Cornholio and his electric drill. As a stand-in I took my old bike out for a ride and ended up blowing out my back tire. Tonight, I decided to teach myself how to fix a flat tire… two tubes and three attempts later I am proud to say I figured it out (and have become an expert at getting my bike tire on and off).
Since when is it humid in Vancouver? I’m used to humidity in Indiana, where there is this thing called Air Conditioning… but there definitely is no air conditioning in my house… and because of my lack of handiness for getting the ceiling fan installed I am missing that one as well. As a result I have taken to sleeping on my couch with the windows open.
Saturday morning I headed out with V and Kmay for a lovely run around the UBC endowment lands… being that none of us knew the paths we decided to just run around for an hour. So we did, and it was great until at 40 minutes we realized that we had run too far downhill and now had to run all the way uphill back to the car. It’s okay though, the paths and scenery made up for it… oh who am I kidding. the only thing that got us through it was knowing that we were going for brunch at the end of the run.
Later that evening I had a date night with brother – he took me for hamburgers at Splitz (Mary was apparently shocked that I agreed to go for Hamburgers…. ) and the bacon that they put on those burgers had to be the best damn bacon I have ever had. We then returned to my place to watch the lightning storm and a bad movie. During this time we also taught ourselves how to call the Vancouver Police Department’s non-emergency line.
It all started when I noticed a cab parked out in our alley… at first I assumed he was just waiting to pick up fare from the drug dealer… but then he got out of his cab and proceeded to pour a mixed drink out of his trunk, and then went back into the cab and chugged it back. At this point I tried calling Yellow Cab to inform them that one of their on duty drivers was hitting the bottle a little early… they put me on hold. We then hung up and called the VPD… as I watched him rinse his coffee mug out and put it back into his trunk. Umm yeah, I can honestly say that I am going to be taking Yellow Cab off of my speed dial list (esp cab #8).
To continue with my run-ins with the cops, today I was out for a ride and happened to ride through a bit of a police stand-off… you know, the ones where there are about 10 cops holding shotguns pointed into an apartment window. I never quite figured out what happened but I do know that it lasted at least 3 hours because they were still there when I rode back down 10th street.
The rest of my day was spent watching roller derby at the beach and eating dinner on a sunny sunny patio. On that note, time to watch so vampire TV and then figure out if the humidity in my room is bearable tonight.
