When the weather was nice out and the sun rose before 7am, I used to go to bed at 10 and wake up before 6 to go out on my bike or meet Cec for a run… Alas, the weather lately sucks and it’s so bloody dark out in the morning, I like nothing better than to wake up at 6 and thn proceed to snuggle up in the warmth of my king-size bed and lay there till the very last possible moment for me to get to work on time.
Anyway I’m just going to put it out there and blame it on the fact that as of late my activities have shifted from AM to PM activities as we have started reffing the Fresh Meat scrimmages during the week. (FYI Fresh Meat are derby girls who are going through the tryout process in order to get drafted onto a team next month). This past Wednesday we reffed our first scrimmage and I’m happy to report that it wasn’t nearly as big of a gong-show as I had expected. During bouts there are 5 on-skate refs in the center of the track and 2 along the outside then you add in penalty trackers, time keepers, point keepers etc. Now, have all of the on-skate refs moving with the speed of the pack and calling penalties to the players and then into the trackers… you can imagine why I expected our first attempt of this to be a bit of a gong-show.
To continue the derby theme, Megan and I headed down to Bremerton for a road-trip to stand in as groupies for the TCRG All-Stars… (they won 116 – 113) and we sat in the stands pretending that we knew more than the refs in the bout and pointed out everything they did wrong… that being said, I’m sure had I actually been participating int eh reffing duties I would have been eating my own words.
On that note, I’ve averaged 4 hours of sleep per night this weekend so I’m going to attempt to be a normal human being and go to bed.
After months of deliberation… and many inappropriate suggestions I have finally decided upon a derby name!
Before Christmas I was sure that I was going with ‘Queen LaStreefah’… that was until the practice that people started calling me ‘Queen’ for short… and lets admit it kids, I hated being called ‘Queen’. So over Christmas break the Bell clan through some more names into the mix, ‘Streefer Madness’ being one of those… which is a superb name… if I were a pot head – thankfully for my bank account and lungs, I’m not.
After some more debate, and collaboration with friends we came up with the name that is going to stick while I ref…
Ladies and gentlemen, drum roll please…….
My new derby name is: Streef Legal
Now all I have to do is perfect the art o skating in a circle with the pack, while avoiding the 4 other on-skate refs, while calling penalties to players and repeating them to penalty trackers… no big deal!
This weekend we continued to brainstorm derby names…
Up until Saturday night the forerunner was ‘Streefcake’… actually, lets not kid ourselves… that is still the forerunner.
I debated not posting the list we came up with, mainly out of concern for the last few strands of hair that remain on Cornholio’s head… but then I figured that he wouldn’t get half of the jokes anyway.
So here it goes (all credit for these go to Jodi, Lawrence, Greg, Gunner and Derek – while Rachele and Hayley quietly sat by looking disturbed).
Queefkirk, Streefighter, Queen LaStreefah, Pink Taco, Cameltoe, Tits McGee, Busty LaRou, Streef Captain Kirk, Kris T-Bag, Canoe full of streef meat (?), Streef-cork, Grapes of Wrath, Hot Streef Injection, Streef Curtains, Fun Bags, Streaker(k), Gloria Hole, Annie Juanita Vajajay (say it out loud)
So seriously, someone out there has to have a derby name that won’t jeopardize the hair left on poor Cornholio’s head – take a stab and post your ideas in the comments!
When I last wrote about derby I was trying out. Well that failed… but not miserably! Truth be told I just didn’t have enough time on my skates and there were a lot of girls out there who had played before or who had some form of skating experience.
So, to learn more, and to spend some more time on my skates – I decided to be a part of the Terminal City Authority Figures… meaning that instead of taking hits I’ll be blowing away on a whistle and sending players to the corner.
On that note, I’m still on the look out for a good derby name…
For those of you who know me, you know that sometimes I lack a certain amount of coordination when it comes to activities on land. When I was 13, I tried out for high school cheer-leading and didn’t make it. When I was 5, I got kicked out of ballet. When I was 26, I went for a run and tripped over my own feet and fell face first into the seawall.
Yup, I was born for water sports.
Which is why me strapping on roller skates and trying out for derby may come as a surprise to most… and to myself…
So tonight was the first round of tryouts – where we strapped on our skates (which in my case have been on 4 times now) and were put through a series of different drills. I can proudly report that I didn’t fall, I didn’t end up in the hospital, I didn’t make anyone else fall nor did I break any bones.
So now we’ll all just have to sit back and wait and see what happens… regardless I had a blast and look forward to being involved one way or another!
