Hockey, hockey, hockey!

On Thursday Mike, Jess, Greg and I headed to the USA v. Norway men’s hockey game… I’m not going to lie – I secretly wished that Norway was going to win to knock the USA down in the standings but they had no chance so I resorted to cheering alongside the USA fins sitting around us.

After the game we headed out to Cactus to watch the Canada game with a large crowd of rowdies… and resorted to taking shots of Patron after Canada won in a shoot out. In hindsight, saying ‘tequila if Canada Looses or patron if Canada wins’ is not really the smartest logic and has now led to a ban on tequila shots on school-nights.

Oh Olympics, I love you.

Spring?!

This weekend I could have been convinced that Spring has arrived in Vancouver…

It made for an amazing ride along the beach and up through UBC.

The end.

Olympics: Day 1 – Day 4

I’ve been spending some time wandering around the city taking in the sights of the Olympics – not to mention people watching… oh boy is the people watching wonderful!

On Friday we watched the Opening Ceremonies from home (how great was KD Lang??) and then decided to venture downtown for some alcoholic beverages and in hopes that Wayne Gretzky had decided to hang out around the flame for a while to bask in his own glory. (he wasn’t there).

Needless to say we got some sweet shots of the Olympic Flame and Robson Square…

Sunday I ventured out in daylight with Samba and experienced the insanity that was Yaletown, Coal Harbour and Robson Square by day. There’s nothing like being pinned between a mob of 500 and the chain link fence that holds the crowd back from the Olympic Flame!

Yesterday Trevor arrived in town – and him and his friend showed me that I really am old and lame and that being 23 apparently gives you the energy to go out till four in the morning. I also came to the conclusion that I never want teenagers as I woke up every 15 minutes wondering if he was lost in the city and couldn’t figure out how to get home.

Bob.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I’d like to introduce you to Bob.

Bob is my new (to me) 2008 Norco crr sL m6… and it may just be the highlight of my year – considering we are waist deep n Olympics that is a pretty big statement.

Bob weighs slightly over 15lbs, is made out of carbon, and I can assure you that he is going to help me fly up hills…. I’d say down hills as well but anyone who has ridden with me knows that I’m a chicken when it comes to going down hills.

I attempted to go for a ride with Bob this weekend – but I couldn’t get the pedals off to put on the old ones that fit my shoes… so I am patiently awaiting the arrival of Cornholio and his electric drill. As a stand-in I took my old bike out for a ride and ended up blowing out my back tire. Tonight, I decided to teach myself how to fix a flat tire… two tubes and three attempts later I am proud to say I figured it out (and have become an expert at getting my bike tire on and off).

Dear Facebook

Dear Facebook,

Generally I don’t care when you mess with your UI – for the most part I like seeing that changes are being made. But seriously there are a few things that SUCK with your new interface – and for once, I don’t blame the 1000′s who have changed their status updates to complain and rant about the fact that you changed a site they probably spend half their days stalking people on.

For starters, when I attempt to lurk through people’s pictures I loose the entire left-hand navigation. SO when my user flow is to select ‘Photos’ and then some random album – the only navigation I’m left with is a contextual menu back to that person’s profile and their other albums.

What if said album isn’t worth creeping through and I want a quick way back to the main ‘photos’ section – hell I may not even know this person if it was just a tagged image. So now, I have to click back through on the Facebook logo to return to the homepage and select ‘Photos’ again. Thinking of it from the use case of a professional lurker that is A LOT of clicking just to look through 4 or 5 albums.

While we are on that note – why can’t I filter down by tagged images v. new albums? Lame, give me my filtering back.

I’ll give you points for moving notifications up to the left hand corner – but then take them immediately back for leaving the chat box floating in the bottom right-hand corner, even though you list my online friends when chat is on over on the left-nav, it doesn’t matter cause you take them away when I look at an image! Why repeat the functionality? Just do it once and do it right.

I’ll end my rant on your search box. I cannot tell you how many times I have attempted to do a search and accidentally put it in the status field. Hmm that could be embarrassing – imagine, creepers everywhere accidentally publishing the names of people they are looking at – all because you moved a search box into the middle of the freaking page above another element with the same functionality.

Now, I know you have money, and I know you hire UX professionals – because I’m pretty sure that I applied for a job with you once… but seriously – maybe you want to look at investing some more of your money into user testing before you start adding more features. Just a thought.

Sincerely,
Loyal Facebook Lurker
