Novembrance Day Camping
I really need to stop making decisions under the influence of tequila. In the past tequila has ‘made’ me decide to bike down to Seattle, book airplane tickets to LA and wake up with a few nasty headaches. Halloween was no exception – however this time I agreed to go camping. In November.
So a group of 11 of us headed up to Porteau Cove for the weekend – by the time we got there one of those 11 participants was already out for the count from a day full of ‘staying warm’ (aka Drinking) and barely managed to hang her head out of the car to say hello.
The temperature hovered around freezing the entire weekend – and we watched the snowline on the mountains creep lower and lower, followed by some snow showers, followed by an extremely large rainstorm.
We spent five hours Saturday morning cooking three large packs of bacon over the fire, and then seeing what other food items we could fry in the bacon fat. Dinner involved cooking steaks over the fire followed by bailey shots straight from the bottle – by that point boiling water to make hot chocolate was overrated.
Half of us avoided using tents and instead opted for sleeping in cars where we had the ability to turn the heat on whenever we woke up to cold (yeah, yeah, I know it’s not good for the environment… but we managed to get home without frostbite or getting sick!)
All in all it was a fun (yet cold) weekend – and I’m thinking by this time next year I’ll forget how cold it was and quite possibly may return again for some Novembrance Day celebrations.
